Spiders!

Hi Readers!

I am happy to be back from maternity leave and working with you on our reading blog again!

Now, many of you may not like spiders in real life (I know I don't), but I think we would all agree that E.B. White has made Charlotte, the grey spider, a pretty likable character.  And in the chapter you just read, Wilbur realizes that it's a pretty amazing feat to spin a web...something he couldn't do.

Please cruise around the following website about real-life spiders and tell me 2 things you learned about them!  http://www.kidzone.ws/lw/spiders/facts.htm

Maybe you'll start liking spiders a little more (or maybe not!).

Thanks,
Mrs. Springston

Underground Railroad 10/07

Dear Readers,
You should have now finished the book!  Congratulations!  You just studied a topic more deeply from your unit in Social Studies, the Southeast Region.
My question for you today is When and why did the Underground Railroad stop? A fourth grade answer would have specific details from the text in both parts of the question. Show me you really understand what you read.

Love,
Ms. Fletter

Strider 10/11

Dear Readers,

As you know, the book we just finished reading, Strider, is written entirely as journal entries by the main character, Leigh.

Here is my journal entry:

October 11, 2012

The last few days have been very busy for me!  I had early meetings on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Those days are hard for me because I have to get my daughter ready, out of the house and to daycare just a little bit early, too.
Luckily, I have gotten home fairly early after work the last couple of days so I have had a lot of time to play with Audrey.  She is so much fun right now because she is jibber jabbering so much and even saying real words.  The funniest thing she did was when I was at my appointment the other day and she was waving at all the random people in the waiting area and saying "hello" to them.  I just love that girl so much.
The most exciting thing that happened in the last couple of days was going to the doctor.  My husband and I got to hear the new baby's heartbeat and everything is going very well.  I'm glad to know that the baby is growing right on track, healthy and strong, in my belly!
Tomorrow is the Dragon Dash and I am much looking forward to it.  I can't wait to see my students work their hardest and run, run, run!

Your job today is to write a blog post with a journal entry of what you did the past couple of days.  If you did a lot of exciting things yesterday, then it can just include yesterday.  But, if not much happened yesterday, then include a few previous days as well.

Strider 9/28

Dear Readers,
You did a nice job inferring as to why Leigh had a 15 day (out of 10)! Please make sure you go back and read the posts from our Literacy Circle Group before answering today's question.

Yesterday we talked about what we do when we read a word we don't know. Sometimes we can figure it out from the meaning of the story, or sentences surrounding the word. If not, we can look it up in the dictionary. This happens to teachers when they read also! There are sooo many words out there!

Please share any words you can across in last reading, which you should have written on a sticky note, on this blog. Tell us the word, what you think it means, and how you figured it out.

Thank you for working hard everday!
Love,

Ms. Fletter

Strider 9/26

Dear Readers,

By now we should have all read up to page 113.  The last chapter begins with "On a scale of one to ten, today was about fifteen."  Please retell the things in this chapter that made Leigh feel this way.  Do not look in the book.  Do your best and think!

Love,
Ms. Fletter

Strider 9/21

Good afternoon, Readers!

We were talking about inferring yesterday. This means we are looking for more information on our characters and the story and finding clues in the things they do or say.

Noting details was about finding information directly in the text. Inferring is about looking deeper into what is written in the text.

I am sure many of you noticed on page 68 several words were scratched out in the first paragraph. Leigh never says why he did this new thing all of a sudden. What can you infer is the reason for this? Please post your answer and any other inferences you might have made from your reading.

After posting, please read pages 79-90 now or for homework. Also, write on a sticky note an inference you made for disscussion tomorrow.

Noting Details 9/19

Dear Readers,

Remember how noting details while we read helps us to make inferences, predictions, etc?  Paying attention to the details is what really allows us to be connected to the story.

On page 58, I was focused on the following detail: "As we sat facing one another in that booth, it seemed to me that Dad and I didn't have much to say to each other. Maybe we never did."

Your question to answer today is: Why do you think that Leigh and his dad have such a hard time communicating with eachother?  Remember to base your answer on the text you've read so far, as well as your schema (background knowledge).

Thanks,
Mrs. Springston

P.S. Remember to follow all friendly letter rules (which includes commas in the right places and capitalizing correctly).

Noting Details

Dear Readers,

I was able to infer that Strider really trusts Leigh as his owner and I hope you were able to make this inference, too.  What detail or details from the text made us able to make this inference?  Please refer back to the text to find your detail(s).

Also, a couple of you are not getting your comments posted because you're forgetting commas or not following capitalization rules.  Remember to do so in order to get credit for your comment and get it posted.

Thanks,
Mrs. Springston
