  3. Dear Mrs.S,

The book From Barbados To Brooklyn, The Story Of Shirley Chisolm by Flora Floss is about the changes she has made and the amazing things she has done. When Shirley was growing up, her parents didn't have enough money to raise Shirley and her sisters in Brooklyn, New York. So, the girls were sent to Barbados to live with their grandmother. Shirley and her sisters came back from Barbados when Shirley was ten. Shirley did very good in school.
Shirley's heroines were Dr.Bethune and Harriet Tubman. One of Shirley's heroines, Dr.Bethune, saw Shirley win at an oratorical contest. Dr.Bethune, Shirley's heroine, told her that she was smart, and to “stand up and be counted.” As Dr.Bethune said, Shirley had great oratorical skills. Shirley was offered several scholarships, and she chose to go to Brooklyn college. She used her debating or oratorical skills to fight for civil rights by joining th NAACP, or the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Shirley started working with children as a job, then became a supervisor after she earned a master's degree.
In 1949, Shirley married Conrad Chisolm, who was a private investigator. Both Conrad and Shirley were active in politics. She helped African Americans to be elected to public office. She then ran for the New York state assembly and she won. She helped pass laws to help people. In 196, Chisolm ran for th U.S. House of Representatives, won, and became the first African American woman to enter the U.S. Congress. Then Chisolm spoke out for woman, poor, and other people in need. She also suggested to end discrimination against women. She served 20 years in the U.S. Congress. In 1972, he chose to run for president. Many people doubted her, made of her, and ignored her. Although Shirley didn't win th presidency, she was the first woman to be considered for a presidential nomination.
Shirley Chisolm is retired, but is being counted. She taught at universities and colleges, and she received more than one hundred honorary degrees. She has also created a few organizations, and she spoke at Dr.Bethune's college, Bethune-Cookman College. Shirley Chisolm has received many, many awards.
Yes, Shirley Chisolm has made a lot of progress, but she still realizes of (social)problems.
I think Shirley Chisolm was an amazing person, how she thrived many hard times, and because of that many people have been given more chances.

    Jay
