ITY of the B and JR Chapter 1

Dear Students,

Chapter 1 included different details about Chinese culture.  How is it different than American culture?  Try to list 3 differences.

1)
2)
3)

This information will come in handy when Bandit (Shirley Temple Wong) moves to New York City and tries to adjust to the American ways.

Thanks,
Mrs. Springston

  1. 2)Dear Mrs.S,

    1) One way is that the U.S.A is different from China is that the U.S.A doesn't have the year of the Dragon, Boar, ox etc.
2)Another way is that the U.S.A doesn't say that there's going to be bad luck if you have a nightmare on new year's day.
    3) The last thing is that breaking a thing doesn't bring bad luck for the next 3 hundred 65 days.

  2. Hi Joseph,

Thanks for your comment. I have a question for you to think about and respond to. On 2 and 3 you stated that the Chinese have superstitions and that doing certain things can cause bad luck. Do we have some of that in our culture though? Can you think of any superstitions that some of your friends or family members may have?

    Thanks,
    Mrs. Springston

  3. Dear Mrs.S

These are the ways that American cultures are different from Chinese cultures.

    1) American culture is different from Chinese culture because Shirley(Bandit) played game called pickup beans while we have games like monopoly, chess, and games like that.
    2) American culture is also different because on new years day, Shirley wasn't allowed to brake anything, be dirty, have a misplaced thing.
3)Lastly, American culture is different because Shirley and her family and relatives could not sleep on any new years eve because a bad dream on new years eve ment bad tomorrows.

  4. Dear Mrs.S,

Some of the things in the U.S.A some people are superstitious about are like, some people say if you break a mirror it will bring a couple of years of bad luck. Also something that people say is bad luck around here is if you walk under a ladder it will give you bad luck too, one time my dad was using a ladder to fix the gutter of our house, and my big cousin who is in 7th now told us not to walk under it our we will have bad luck and I walked under there and she was worried.
That is some of the bad luck people think is real here

    Sincerely, Joseph

2)Here we don't have weird names like 6th cousin.
3)Here we don't have round raidios.

  6. Dear Joseph,

People think luck is real like you said. Like beginners luck, if you sprinkle the saltshaker behind your back your bad luck is gone, etc. What do you think of luck?

  7. Dear Mrs.S,

First, America and China are different because we don't do the 'culture' things,
like we don't have those dragon, rabbit and the other cultures.
Second of all, Chinese people believe in Budda, but we don't.
Like how, I'm not sure if you believe in 'Jesus', but Chinese people don't unless
they were born here, and went to church.
Finally, if you broke something, no bad luck would come,
    for the next 365 days.
These are the three ways how China and U.S.A are different.

    Justin

  9. Hi Literature Circle A students,

Great job on getting your posts done and for doing so well on them. Here are a couple of questions for you to consider:

    1) Justin - you said that we don't have culture (you spoke of the year of the boar, etc.)...but we do have our own culture. Our American culture is the way we do things, the games we play, our tradtions, etc.

    2) Andrea said that we don't have weird names in our culture like they do in China. Would you agree or disagree with this statement? Do you think it is possible that people from other countries think our American names are weird?

Please comment back if you have some time.

    Thanks,
    Mrs. Springston

  10. Dear Mrs.S,

I think Andrea is right about the names. But who knows? Somebody in North America might have a weird name too. We have a good chance that somebody might.....but there is probably not a person in America with the names Shirley(Bandit) and her family had. And yes, I think some people from other countries might think our names are weird.
